The method involves emitting the signal waves by a vehicle (10) in laterally downward manner. The signal waves concerning to a vertical track, are perpendicularly arranged to a track of the vehicle, in which an angle area for latitudinal direction of the vehicle is emitted outwardly from the vehicle and concerning to the vertical track in another angle area for longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The distance and the height are determined depending on the reflections of signal waves. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for determining a distance of a vehicle from a barrier and a height of barrier; and (2) an assistance system for automatic prevention of damage of the vehicle by the barrier.
