PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device for, when occlusion occurs during animal tracking using a photographic means mounted on a vehicle, complementing the location of the animal with high accuracy during the occlusion. SOLUTION: This vehicle periphery monitoring device is provided with: an object extraction means for extracting an image region of an object from a pickup image; an animal decision means for deciding whether or not an object in the image region extracted by an object extraction means is a designated animal having the head at either the right or left side of the trunk; an occlusion decision means for deciding whether or not the occlusion in which the object disappears from the pickup image has occurred during tracking the object in the pickup image; and a position complementing means for complementing the location of the designated animal during the occlusion based on the location of the designated animal and the location of the head to the trunk extracted from the pickup image before the occlusion occurs.
