<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical instrument having a jaw section translatable between an open position and a closed position. <P>SOLUTION: This surgical instrument is provided with a frame, an elongate portion extending distally from the frame and defining a longitudinal axis, a firing rod disposed at least partially within the elongate portion and translatable with respect to the elongate portion, a connector disposed adjacent to the distal portion of the firing rod, and an end effector disposed at the distal end of the elongate portion. The end effector includes a first jaw member and a second jaw member, the jaw members are movable to each other between an open position and a proximal position, and the first jaw member is a cartridge having a knife.
