<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key which includes a mechanical key for use in an emergency, and which realizes miniaturization and a reduction in thickness. <P>SOLUTION: This electronic key 1 includes a communication circuit portion 16 which transmits electric waves, including an ID code, to a communication control unit provided in a vehicle, so as to permit the control of external equipment provided in the vehicle 20, when the ID code is a normal one, and a battery 11b for supplying direct-current electricity to the communication circuit portion 16. The electronic key 1 is also equipped with a case body 1a for housing the communication circuit portion 16 and the battery 11b, and a sliding cover 1b which is slidably supported on the case body 1a and formed in an approximately flat plate shape and which makes the battery almost hermetically sealed in the case body in the closing of the case body.
