PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical liquid crystal display by an active-matrix address method and a liquid-crystal medium for such a display. SOLUTION: There are disclosed the electro-optical liquid crystal display essentially consisting of the components described below and the liquid-crystal medium for the display. The liquid-crystal medium includes (A) 30-70 wt.% of two or more compounds represented by formula I and (B) 20-50 wt.% of two or more compounds represented by R<SP>1</SP>-L-E-R<SP>2</SP>(L and E can be the same or different from each other, L is 1,4-cyclohexilene and E is 1,4-pheylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene).
