PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small zoom lens that has a high zoom ratio and a high optical performance over the entire zooming range, and to provide an imaging apparatus having the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in order from an object side to an image side, a first lens group of positive refractive power, a second lens group of negative refractive power, and a rear group including one or more lens groups. When zooming, the zoom lens moves at least two lens groups. The first lens group has an optical element of positive refractive power and a compound optical element wherein at least one optical element of negative refractive power is joined to the optical element of positive refractive power. The refractive indexes n<SB>d1p</SB>and Abbe's numbersν<SB>dlp</SB>of the materials of the optical element of the positive refractive power and the refractive indexes n<SB>d1n</SB>and Abbe's numbersν<SB>dln</SB>of the materials of at least the optical element of negative refractive power are appropriately set.
