<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for setting optimum transfer conditions while suppressing toner consumption, thereby improving productivity and reliability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a color image forming apparatus, primary transfer conditions for image carriers are determined in order from the upstream side based on the results of detection by both first and second reference pattern detecting means, the first reference pattern detecting means being configured to detect a reference pattern on an intermediate transfer body further downstream than the most downstream image carrier in the rotating direction of an intermediate transfer body, and the second reference pattern detecting means being configured to detect a reference pattern image on the most downstream image carrier.
