<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that, in welding/joining two heavy pieces of piping on site, it is difficult to secure sufficient accuracy in groove aligning operation including centering and gap adjustment in the axial direction of the two pipes to take a lot of time in the groove aligning operation, resulting in a scourge of field operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Two sets of frames freely opened/closed in a chevron shape are clamped mechanically by a clamp device relative to two pipes to be welded and are made adjustable in the relative position in the radial direction of the two pipes by a centering device installed in the outer periphery of the frames. Also, using an axial position adjusting screw provided in the frames, a gap and a contact force in the axial direction of the pipes at the grooves are adjusted so as to be uniform in the entire circumference, so that accurate groove alignment is performed.
