Disclosed is a controller of an internal combustion engine wherein slipping of a clutch in an automatic transmission can be controlled when an internal combustion engine is restarted automatically. In the case of cranking startup of an internal combustion engine (1) from the stop position, during automatic stoppage of the internal combustion engine (1), of a piston (10) in a first ignition cylinder at the time of restart which starts combustion at first at the time of restarting the internal combustion engine (1) automatically during an idle stop control, an ignition time at the time of restart, i.e. from cranking startup until the first ignition of the first ignition cylinder at the time of restart, is calculated and driving start timing of a starter motor (19) is delayed according to the ignition time at the time of restart.  Consequently, cranking startup of the internal combustion engine (1) is performed by the starter motor (19) after the hydraulic pressure supplied from an electric oil pump (27) is increased, and slipping of a clutch (24) of a CVT (14) can be controlled at the time of a first ignition in the first ignition cylinder at the time of restart.
