PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet printer configured to define a time required before stopping the printer after an ink stored in an ink cartridge comes to an end so as to prevent an air from entering an ink circulation path, and to provide an ink detecting method thereof. SOLUTION: The standby time T required before the printer detects the ink absence state of the ink cartridge 5 is set so as to establish (V1)/(P1-R)<T<(V2)/(H), provided that a volume by the amount of a level difference between on/off positions of a level position sensor 42b in an upper tank 31 is expressed by V1, a volume obtained when the opening of an outlet port is exposed on the level after the level position sensor 42b is turned off is expressed by V2, an air volume in a normal state of the upper tank 31 is expressed by V3, a flow amount of ink flowing from a lower tank 32 to the upper tank 31 is expressed by P1, an ink discharge amount of the ink head 2 is expressed by H, a flow amount of ink flowing from the upper tank 31 toward the ink head 2 is expressed by R.
