The invention provides a method for measuring the selectivity of a process for the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene, wherein a reactant gas stream comprising ethylene and oxygen is supplied to an ethylene oxide reactor containing catalyst, and a product gas stream comprising ethylene oxide is withdrawn from the ethylene oxide reactor. The absorbance of infrared or near infrared radiation by the reactant and product gas streams or by samples of the streams is measured and the composition of the gas streams is analysed. The selectivity of the process is calculated from the compositional data. The invention also provides a process for maintaining and/or improving the selectivity of a process for the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene. |
