The invention relates to a rack installation having a loading and removal apparatus for pallets, which can be moved along the racks. The loading and removal apparatus has loading and removal beams for running under support legs of the pallets. The loading and removal beams are mounted on vertically movable cantilevers, which have drive devices for the loading and removal beams. The loading and removal beams are surrounded, in the longitudinal direction of the beams, by transport chains which are guided on the beam upper side and are turned back at the beam ends and fixed at the beam underside. By this means, during extension and retraction of the loading and removal beams, the transport chains execute an increased relative motion with respect to the loading and removal beams so that storage and removal of the pallets is accelerated. <IMAGE>
