Quantity-controlled internal combustion engine with a machine arranged in the intake duct

A screw compressor, mechanically connected to its crankshaft, is arranged in the intake duct of a quantity-controlled internal combustion engine. The said compressor has a gas distributor, which can be actuated by means of slide valves, so that the inlet closing time can be adjusted by appropriate slide valve actuation. This permits a throttle-free quantity control throughout the entire load range of the internal combustion engine; in the low-load range, the compressor delivers the power obtained by expansion of the intake air in intake operation to the internal combustion engine, in the high-load range, the screw compressor is driven by the internal combustion engine and thereby acts as a mechanical supercharger, the invention, here too, also concentrating on throttle-free quantity control. A number of variant embodiments of slide valves for adjusting the inlet closing time of a screw compressor are also specified.
