<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove influence of a backside printed characters from a both sides-printed document. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image processor detects a front character code and a backside printed character code from image data obtained by scanning the document (S200-S208). When a region that cannot be determined which is which (NO in S202 and NO in S206), the edge amount of the region is calculated (S210), and a histogram showing the frequency distribution of the edge amount is created (S212). When two frequency peaks appear in the histogram (YES in S214), the region is determined to have the front character overlapping on the backside printed character (S216).
