In a biometric authentication device, a control unit photographs a blood vessel pattern of a finger from a constant direction at every brightness of each stage by a CCD camera while an LED array is changed to different brightness of a plurality of stages and synthesizes a plurality of photographed pictures so that they are overlapped. Thus, one synthesized picture including all the blood vessel patterns displayed on the respective pictures is generated, and the blood vessel pattern of the synthesized picture is collated with the blood vessel pattern of a registrant.
