A non-resonant two-photon absorbing material comprises methine dye undergoing a non-resonant two-photon absorption. An independent claim is also included for a method of inducing non-resonant two-photon absorption and generating an emission by irradiating the dye with a laser ray having a wavelength longer than the linear absorption band of the dye and present at 400-1000 nm.
