The valve operating mechanism has two equally acting gas-exchange valves for every cylinder. A lifting height of the gas exchange valve is adjusted in two different lift heights. A zero-stroke and an average stroke are provided for the former gas exchange valve, where a zero-stroke and a complete-stroke are provided for the latter gas exchange valve. An independent claim is included for an operating method for a valve of an internal combustion engine.
