An organic electroluminescent device (OELD) comprises a substrate 2, a first electrode 4, a second transparent electrode 6, an organic light emitting layer 8, and a glass or transparent plastic encapsulant 14. A cavity is formed between the encapsulant 14 and the transparent electrode and a cavity filling material 20 is disposed within the cavity. The cavity filling material 20 extends from a bottom side of the cavity to a top side of the cavity, and is formed with an optical structure. Optical structures include diffraction gratings, corrugations, micro-lenses, and prisms. The cavity filling material 20 may also include a coating 24. To prevent damage to the OELD during manufacture of the optical structure, the cavity filling material 20 is provided on the inner surface of the encapsulant 14 and patterned to form the optical structure. The optical structure may be formed by embossing,. printing, etching or photolithography. |
