The device (1) has two electrical machines (6, 7), and a mechanical assembly (9) connecting a shaft (4) of wheels (5), shaft (2) of a heat engine (3) and shafts (10, 11) of the electrical machines, where the machines comprise motor or generator. The assembly is formed by planetary gearsets. A commutation device (21.2) has a jaw clutch and yoke for connecting the shaft of the machine (6) to the shaft of the engine or to element (27) e.g. crown wheel, of the gearsets. An independent claim is also included for a method of transmitting power between heat engine shaft and wheel shaft.
