Process for the formation of thionyl halide adducts with amides represented functionally by the structure I (X = Cl, Br or I), based on the reaction of a thionyl halide of formula SOX2 with an amide selected from the group comprising formamide, N-methylformamide, N,N- dibutylformamide, N,N-diisobutylformamide, N,N- diethylformamide, morpholine formamide, piperidine formamide, pyrrolidine formamide, tetraethyl urea, tetrabutyl urea, methyl acetamide and dimethyl acetamide. These halides are useful for activating groups involved in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, such as specific antibiotics. <IMAGE>
