The system (1) has a power-branching transmission (3) provided between input and output shafts (4, 5). A mechanical drive train (7) is provided for mechanical power transmission between the shafts. A hydrostatic transmission (8) is provided with a hydraulic energy storage unit (14). Hydrostatic machines (12, 13) are provided between the shafts. The drive train and the hydrostatic transmission are connected by the branching transmission. An operating hydraulic unit (11) is connected with the mechanical drive train at a side of the input shaft, and exhibits a hydraulic energy storage (27). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a drive system.
