An exercise assistance device in which the adjustment range of the position of a contact surface of a seat section is set according to the body build of a user and in which the bending angle of the knees can be set to a desired angle independent of the body height of the user. The seat section (21) supports the hips of the user (M) with their foot soles placed on a foot placement surface that is the upper surface of a footrest (40). The seat section (21) is moved by a motor-equipped seat drive section (50) so that the weight of the user (M) acting on their legs varies. The seat section (21) ascends and descends together with the seat drive section (50) by means of a lifting mechanism section (60). The ascending and descending directions of the seat section (21) by the lifting mechanism section (60) are constrained on a line tilting rearward relative to a vertical line and determined based on the smallest and largest body builds of users.
