The system has a non-embarked data processing terminal i.e. personal computer, for analyzing operation data of vehicle stored in an embarked digital controller on a motor vehicle . A diagnostic probe (20) in the form of case is connected to the controller so as to read the operation data. The probe is connected to the terminal in a removable manner. The probe is connected to the terminal for reading the operation data stored in the controller when the vehicle is stopped. The probe is disconnected from the terminal for recording the data exchanged by the controller when the vehicle is in movement. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling diagnostic probe of a failure diagnostic system of vehicle.
