PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric lamp lighting device suppressing an increase in output DC voltage even when a load is light.

SOLUTION: The electric lamp lighting device is provided with: a power supply unit 51 which converts an input voltage V0 into a raised DC output voltage V1 through switching operation by an field effect transistor Q1; an inverter circuit 52 which converts the DC output voltage V1 converted by the power supply unit 51 into a high frequency voltage and outputs the high frequency voltage to operate a lamp 12; and a changeover unit which controls the switching operation of the field effect transistor Q1 to change the operation mode of the power supply unit 51 to a critical mode or a current discontinuity mode in accordance with a given signal. The mode of the power supply unit 51 is changed to the current discontinuity mode when the load is light, thereby suppressing an increase in the output DC voltage V1.
