<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for forming a mark on the surface of a diamond or other gemstones. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A method and an apparatus are disclosed for forming a mark on the surface of a diamond or gemstone. The mark consists of a plurality of grooves (10) which do not detrimentally affect the clarity grade of the diamond or gemstone, and which exhibit a highly diffractive effect under specified illumination and magnification conditions.
