The invention comprises polyoxyanthraquinones which contain a single anthraquinone nucleus having two hydroxy groups in a -positions of one of the benzene rings and in at least one b -position of the anthraquinone nucleus a primary amino group monoacylated by the residue of a monocarboxylic acid. They are made by acylation of the corresponding unacylated amino polyoxyanthraquinone, and this process may be carried out in a solvent such as nitrobenzene or chlorbenzene, and in presence of an acid-binding agent such as pyridine or dimethylaniline. The products dye or print polyesters, cellulose esters and ethers, nylon, and polyurethanes. Mixtures of starting materials may be used. In examples, 1,4-dioxy-2-aminoanthraquinone, 1,4,5,8 - tetraoxy - 2 - aminoanthraquinone, 1,4,5 - trioxy - 2 - or- 3 - aminoanthraquinone, and 1,5,8-trioxy-2-aminoanthraquinone are acylated with acetyl, butyryl, benzoyl, p-toluyl, hexahydrobenzoyl, and lauroyl chlorides. Dyeing examples describe the dyeing of polyester fibres at high temperature under pressure or with a swelling-agent at atmospheric pressure. 1,4 - Dioxy - 2 - aminoanthraquinone, 1,4,5,8 - tetraoxy - anthraquinone, and 1,4,5 - trioxy - 2 - or 3-aminoanthraquinone are made by reaction of the corresponding non-aminated bodies with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in alkaline solution.
