<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lane marking detection device accurately recognizing Botts' Dots, and a white line or the like without increasing a processing load. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This lane marking detection device has: a detection area setting means setting a prescribed area in a road surface image as a detection target area in which a lane marking is detected; and a detection means processing image data in the detection target area set by the detection area setting means to detect the lane marking. The detection area setting means sets the detection target areas having size different between the detection target area in a undetected state in which the lane marking has not been detected and in the detection target area in a detected state in which the lane marking has been temporarily detected. At that time, in the detection target area in the detected state, an area shorter in a road width direction than the detection target area in the undetected state is set.
