The method involves determining the distances between motor vehicles such as a front-driving vehicle (1a), following vehicle (1b) and a last vehicle (1c) in a group, where the motor vehicles in the group are arranged in series. Acceleration of each vehicle of the group is controlled such that the distance of successive vehicles corresponds to a given desired value that is below 50 centimeters. The absolute positions and speed of the vehicles are determined. Control data for vehicles are determined based on the determined absolute positions and distances between successive vehicles and speeds. An independent claim is also included for an acceleration controlling device comprising computers.
