A USB flash memory (UM) generates a private key (E) used for user authentication, transfers this key to a host computer (PC) and erases this key without itself storing this key. The host computer (PC) stores this private key (E) that has been received and, when a USB flash memory (UM) is newly connected therewith, makes a decision as to whether or not this USB flash memory (UM) is the previously registered USB flash memory (UM). If this USB flash memory (UM) is indeed the registered USB flash memory (UM), the host computer then transfers the stored private key (E) to the USB flash memory (UM). Furthermore, the USB flash memory (UM) performs user authentication using the private key (E) that has thus been received. In this way, in a storage device in which user authentication is necessary, user convenience is improved when accessing storage media, while a certain degree of security is till maintained.
|
