PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of reducing electrical stress at the time of starting. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes a down-converter circuit for outputting DC power, an inverter circuit for supplying AC power a discharge lamp by converting DC power output from the down-converter circuit to AC power, a voltage-reduction driving circuit for controlling output voltage Vd of the down-converter circuit, and a lighting detection circuit for detecting an asymmetrical state wherein a peak value of output current I1 to the discharge lamp becomes different due to a direction of the current and lighting of the discharge lamp. The voltage-reduction driving circuit reduces the output voltage Vd of the down-converter circuit from a time point T1 wherein the lighting of the discharge lamp and the asymmetrical state are detected by the lighting detection circuit. Thus, the electrical stress caused by the asymmetrical state at the time of starting can be reduced since the peak value of the output current I1 to the discharge lamp is reduced.
