PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable transmission ratio steering device that is inexpensive and highly reliable. SOLUTION: A DF 19 is built in a control microcomputer 13 of an ECU 10. The DF 19 enables the high-speed writing of data, and can instantaneously finish communication. Therefore, when a battery 17 is removed while an IG switch 15 is turned on, the control microcomputer 13 is operated by power stored in a capacitor 18 of a power circuit 12 so that rotation angle data can be written into the DF 19. Furthermore, when power is interrupted because the IG switch 15 is turned off, the data are written both into an EEPROM 14 that is externally provided to the control microcomputer 13 and into the DF 19. Upon a subsequent startup, it is determined whether the DF data and the EEP data are effective or ineffective, and when at least either of the data are determined to be effective, the effective data are used to control a variable transmission ratio unit 3.
