<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating the mold clamping device of a toggle type injection molding machine which prevents a movable platen from staggering and slanting. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A pair of tapered spacers (42 and 43) is set between the inner surface of a tie-bar nut pocket (26) and a tie-bar nut (25). When implementing at least a mold opening process, a mold closing process, and a mold clamping process, the spacer (42) is driven by a piston cylinder unit (45), and clearances (S1, S1, etc.) in the axial direction of a tie-bar are eliminated substantially.
