<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an appliance control apparatus and method that easily achieves appliance control suitable for the current living situation of a resident in order to promote environmental load reduction and energy saving. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of records are classified into a plurality of living situation groups by clustering the plurality of records of state data including the values of various operation states of each collected appliance. Subsequently, with regard to obtained state data, a living situation group to which that data belong is determined, the state data are compared with the centroid of various operation states of each appliance which is calculated for the living situation group to which the state data belong, and the value of the centroid is determined as a recommended operation state for the operation state of an appliance having a value in the state data larger than the centroid.
