PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp stabilizer which has superior versatility, and furthermore, in which an abnormal discharge, or the like, in a discharge lamp or wiring can be detected in an appropriate manner. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp stabilizer 10 is equipped with a voltage detecting means 50 to detect the voltage supplied to the discharge lamp 48, and a power supply control means 52, which compares a normal voltage region in a plurality of mode periods after turning-on of the discharge lamp lighting switch with the voltage supplied to the discharge lamp, and stops the power supply to the discharge lamp, when the voltage supplied deviates from the normal voltage regions of respective mode periods. The power supply control means has a start-up mode in which a non-loaded voltage is regarded as a normal voltage region, at least after the lighting switch of the discharge lamp is turned on and until the discharge lamp lighting is detected or the maximum normal start-up period elapses, a start-up initial period mode in which a region between an abnormal short circuit high voltage region and the start-up initial period abnormality short circuit low voltage region is regarded as the normal voltage region, and a stable lighting period mode, in which after the start-up initial mode is finished, a region between the abnormality short circuit high voltage region and the stable lighting period abnormal short circuit low voltage region is regarded as the normal voltage region.
