PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device reducing the length of time before completion of focusing and stably improving the focusing accuracy. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 1 detects a focus by a phase difference detection system. The device determines, before detecting a focus, whether or not a focusing lens 22 is within an allowable range, and moves the focusing lens 22 by a driving section 20 when the lens is out of the allowable range.
