PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately work an outer peripheral surface of a piston material into a three-dimensional shape, thereby obtaining a piston having improved mileage and saving energy. SOLUTION: An apparatus for working a piston includes a work head 13 to/from which the piston material 40 can be attached/detached, a workpiece rotating means 14, a grinding wheel 25, a grinding wheel rotating means, first and second moving means for moving the grinding wheel 25 in X-axis and Z-axis directions, a rotation angle detecting means for detecting a rotation angle of the work head 13, a first moving position detecting means for detecting a distance from the center of a rotation axis of the piston material 40 to a grinding surface 25a of the grinding wheel 25, a second moving position detecting means for detecting a position of the grinding surface 25a of the grinding wheel 25 with respect to the direction of the rotation axis of the piston material 40, and a control part for controlling the grinding of the grinding wheel 40 based on target distance information from the center of the rotation axis of the material 40 to the grinding surface 40a of the grinding wheel 40 at each position of the outer peripheral surface 40a of the piston material 40.
