<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key which hardly produce a state in which an object for communication is illegally operated by a third person and an electronic key system. <P>SOLUTION: A communication control circuit 36 for performing a smart communication is provided to the key body 35 of a mobile device 4. An emergency key 39 formed of a mechanical key is storable in the key body 35. A transponder 34 is assembled in the emergency key 39. When the emergency key 39 is inserted into the key body 35, the communication control circuit 36 performs an immobilizer communication with the transponder 34 of the emergency key 39, and registers the transponder code of the transponder 34 therein as a key code used for the smart communication.
