PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformize air quantity distribution of air passing through an air cleaning filter or around the air cleaning filter and to improve air cleaning performance, heat exchange performance, and comfortability in an air conditioner. SOLUTION: An indoor unit 30 for the air conditioner is provided with: a case body 5 having a suction port 6 and a blow-out port 7; a cross flow fan 4 arranged within the case body 5 to suck indoor air through the suction port 6 and blow out the indoor air through the blow-out port 7; an indoor heat exchanger 3 arranged on the suction side of the cross flow fan 4 and formed by heat exchange blocks 3a-3d having a plurality of stages to surround the cross flow fan 4; and the flat plate-shaped air cleaning filter 1 arranged on the suction side of the indoor heat exchanger 3. The air cleaning filter 1 is installed to be opposed to a clearance formed on the suction side between the stages of the heat exchange blocks 3a, and have the size and is positioned where average speed of air passing from the air cleaning filter 1 through the indoor heat exchanger 3 including the clearance 10 is approximately equal to the speed passing from both upper and lower sides of the air cleaning filter 1 through the indoor heat exchanger 3.
