PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for controlling transmission power in a communication system. SOLUTION: At a remote station 6, reverse link power control bits are measured which are transmitted by base stations 4a, 4b, 4n to a forward traffic channel 10a. The reverse link 12a, 12b power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in a power control loop. The remote station 6 generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all the base stations 4a, 4b, 4n in communication with the remote station 6. Each base station 4a, 4b, 4n adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel 10a in accordance to its measurements of the forward link power control bits. The gains of the forward traffic channels 10a of the base stations 4a, 4b, 4n are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations may not accumulate.
