PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of outputting images formed to put appropriate gloss on both regular paper and matte coat paper whose glossiness is as low as that of regular paper. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a light transmission device 17 which transmits light through a recording sheet passed through a sheet conveying path 13; and a control device 44 which identifies whether the recording sheet is regular paper or matte coat paper based on a transmitted-light intensity distribution obtained by transmitting light through the recording sheet by the use of the light transmission device and, on the basis of the identification result, alters a fixing condition, such as the fixing temperature of the fixing device 16 or a sheet conveyance speed, to switch the gloss of an image on the recording sheet.
