<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a region including a defect usable in a magnetic recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording and playback device (20) is equipped with: a magnetic recording medium (100) comprising a data region (416) located between a plurality of servo regions (412) and a spare region (418) respectively including recording bits of a magnetic material separated from one another with a non-magnetic material; a defect information storing section to store information expressing a position of a defective recording bit (411) in the data region; and a recording playback section to record signals in the recording bits of the data region and the spare region based on information of the defective recording bit and to play back signals taken out from the recording bits of the data region and the spare region.
