<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for efficiently viewing a scene which a user wants to view without fail, in real-time, without requiring long hours, as much as possible, when the user wants to view two or more programs in the same time zone. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image recording and reproducing apparatus and a viewing method reproduce a digest of a program, at the same time as on a different channel during a period of CM time of an interested program, when a user is viewing two programs in the same time zone (simultaneous viewing). The apparatus comprises a plurality of tuners, an image recording and reproducing part for a program broadcast at the same time on a different channel, a digest generating part therefor, a CM detecting part for an interested program, a control part for simultaneous viewing, and the like. The apparatus also comprises a means for specifying a program for simultaneous viewing on a screen by a user. The control part switches reproduction between an interested program and a digest of a program broadcast, at the same time, on a different channel by switching screen output and controlling a buffer for output data.
