<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hand position detecting device which can accurately perform position detection, using a very simple structure without false detection of rotational position of a hand, and can prevent waste of power consumption. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When detecting a rotational position of a seconds hand, it is determined whether data stored in a register in correspondence with a supply state of a drive current previously supplied to a coil of a stepping motor is "0" that is a determination standard preliminarily stored in a ROM. When the data is "0" as the result of this, the rotational position of the seconds hand is detected by optical detection drive. When the data is "1", the seconds hand is rotated one step, and then, the rotational position of the seconds hand is detected by optical detection drive. Even if the seconds hand is shifted one second in the detection of rotational position of the second hand, the position detection can be executed by each two steps, without false detection thereof.
