<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an animal skin tanning method using no heavy metal such as chromium or aldehyde tanning agent at all, improving quality, and causing no environmental pollution. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the animal skin tanning method, a conventional pre-treating process, wherein soaking a raw skin in water, depilating it, soaking it in lime, re-soaking it in lime, sectioning it, removing the lime from it and bating it, is carried out, and then, pre-tanning is carried out by treating collagenous fibers with a tanning agent composed of tannin, dispersed tannin, oxalic acid, an iron remover, and a slipping agent, adjusting pH of a mixture solution, and keeping the mixture solution at a predetermined temperature after impregnating the raw skin with an acidic solution composed of a salt, sulfuric acid and formic acid. After washing with water, re-tanning is carried out by treatment using a tanning agent composed of a fat liquoring agent, tannin, a dispersant, white tannin, and natural tannin, and subsequently, re-tanning is carried out again with a tanning agent composed of natural tannin and formic acid so that chemical crosslinking bonds are formed structurally and stabilized.
