PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent incorrect surface defect information from being recorded as a part of quality information correlated with a steel strip, which is caused by incorrectly detecting a discolored part generated by a residue in a marking hole bored in a steel strip joint body, as a surface defect on the steel strip. SOLUTION: In this surface inspection device 56, a process computer 46 determines the position of a surface defect on a galvanized steel strip 16 on which a surface defect is detected based on surface defect information transmitted from a system server 44, and determines whether the surface defect is included in a masking domain. When the surface defect is included in a domain other than the masking domain, the computer 46 records the surface defect information as a quality information record correlated with the galvanized steel strip 16, and when the surface defect is included in the masking domain M, the computer 46 does not treat the surface defect information as a recording object for the quality information record.
