The mirror (10) has a mirror carrier (14) holding a mirror element and fixed to a base (12), where the mirror carrier is pivotable around a rotation axis relative to the base. The mirror carrier is connected with the base by a locking insert (16). The locking insert includes a mirror carrier-mounting structure with which the locking insert is fastened to the mirror carrier, a base-mounting structure with which the locking insert is fastened to the base, and a locking unit. The locking unit manually rotates the mirror carrier relative to the base. An independent claim is also included for a method for installing a rear view mirror at a motor vehicle.
