<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a lateral force, without causing increase in the manufacturing cost of a vehicle and a wheel, or deterioration in reliability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The lateral force detection device 1 includes a pressure distribution measuring means 2, which measures the pressure distribution Pmn of the tread of a wheel on a road side; a width-directional pressure distribution computing means 3a which computes a width-directional pressure distribution CO of the tread, by integrating the pressure distribution Pmn in the longitudinal direction of the tread; a position computing means 3b, which determines an approximate curve C by the least-squares approximation of the width-directional pressure distribution CO and computes the width-directional position WT of an apex CP, in which the approximate curve C takes a minimum value; a left-side force computing means 3c, which computes the left-side force SS1 acting on the left side of an apex WT of the tread, by integrating the width-directional pressure distribution CO in the width direction; and a right force computing means 3d, which computes a right force SS2 acting on the right side of the apex WT of the tread by integrating the width-directional pressure distribution CO in the width direction; and a lateral force computing means 3e, which computes a lateral force F generated in the wheel W by determining the difference SS between the left-side force SS1 and the right-side force SS2.
