PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas detector and gas type specifying method, specifying a gas type regardless of the concentration of polarized gas. SOLUTION: A sensor drive control section 11 in a gas sensor device 1 repeatedly performs high temperature control of driving a contact combustion type gas sensor at a high temperature and low temperature control of driving the contact combustion type gas sensor 21 at a low temperature. A gas type specifying section 14 specifies the type of the polarized gas based on an output of the contact combustion type gas sensor 21. The sensor drive control section 11 drives the contact combustion type gas sensor 21 at the low temperature in a reference period when the low temperature control is performed by a predetermined time length and a referring period when the low temperature control is performed by a time length different from the reference period. The gas type specifying section 14 determines the ratio value based on the output of the contact combustion type gas sensor 21 controlled at the high temperature just after the referring period to the output of the contact combustion type gas sensor 21 controlled at the high temperature just after the reference period, and specifies the gas type, based on the determined ratio value.
