<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that it used to be difficult to accurately determine that a waste toner vessel is full because an accumulated state of waste toner has not been considered. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is provided which has an image carrier carrying a toner image and transfers the toner image formed on the image carrier to a transfer member to form an image, and a control method thereof is also provided. A cleaning means is brought into contact with the image carrier to remove toner on the image carrier, and the removed toner is stored into the waste toner vessel. The number of transfer members on which images have been formed (S5), and an image amount relating to formation of toner images are calculated (S3), and it is determined that the amount of toner stored in the waste toner vessel has exceeded an allowable amount, when the count value reaches a first threshold (S6) or the image amount reaches a second threshold (S4).
