The method involves detecting an axle (2,3) of a railcar (1) and determining the driving direction (FR) of the railcar. A position of the former or the latter axle of the railcar is determined from the position of each axle to the time of its detection and previously detected axial distances of the railcar. A part of a track section (G) or a component is firmly arranged in the track section, which is identified as free or occupied depending on the determined position of the former or the latter axle of the railcar and depending on the driving direction. An independent claim is included for an arrangement for monitoring the occupation status of a track section.
